--- ## Description The Fejos Postdoctoral Fellowship enables early career scholars in anthropology or closely related fields to amplify the impact of their completed research through creative multimodal projects. The fellowship is designed for projects in the final stages of media production—such as ethnographic films, audio productions, podcasts, video shorts, experimental films, or tactile performances—that communicate anthropological insights to wider audiences. The program prioritizes projects that are innovative, ethically engaged, and demonstrate collaboration with the communities represented. Applicants must have a strong background in filmmaking or multimedia production, and their proposed work should be firmly rooted in completed anthropological research. The fellowship emphasizes ethical representation, audience engagement, and the use of multimedia to foster social analysis and public engagement with anthropology. --- ## Due Dates - May 1, 2026: Full application deadline (annual). Apply by May 1 for fellowships beginning between January 1 and December 31 of the following year. --- ## Funding Amount - Maximum award: $40,000 for a continuous period of up to 9 months. - The monthly stipend is $4,444; awards are prorated for projects requiring less than 9 months. - No additional funds are available beyond the basic stipend. - Up to four fellowships are awarded annually. - Wenner-Gren does not cover institutional overhead or administrative fees. --- ## Eligibility - Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in anthropology or a closely related field. - Applicants should be no more than 10 years beyond their PhD (allowances for caregiving available with prior approval). - Open to scholars of any nationality or institutional affiliation. - Preference is given to those who are untenured or do not have a permanent academic position. - Prior recipients of a Fejos Postdoctoral Fellowship are not eligible. - Projects must be based on completed academic research; the fellowship does not support pilot research, extended fieldwork, or projects not derived from the applicant’s own research. - The research/filming portion may not exceed one quarter of the total fellowship period. - Applicants must be able to devote a continuous block of time to the fellowship. - Only one submission per applicant may be under consideration at a time; all requirements for existing Wenner-Gren awards must be completed before applying. --- ## Application Process - Applications must be submitted online in English via the [application portal](https://wennergren.tfaforms.net/4966393). - The portal opens 2 months before the May 1 deadline. - Required materials include: - General applicant and project information - Project abstract (200 words max) - Detailed responses to six project description questions (see [application guide](https://wennergren.org/application-guide/fejos-postdoctoral-fellowship/)) - A resubmission statement (if reapplying) - Two media samples: one from prior work and one from the current project (links to online platforms preferred; English subtitles or summaries required for non-English content) - Project bibliography (max 10 pages) and media bibliography/filmography (max 5 pages) - List of required permits and permissions (if applicable; not needed at submission but required before funds are released) - Disclosure of any use of Generative AI in preparing the application - Do not send transcripts, letters of reference, manuscripts, or other supplementary materials unless specifically requested. - Review process takes 2–6 months after the deadline; decisions are communicated by email. --- ## Additional Information - Projects must comply with all U.S. laws, including OFAC regulations for research in sanctioned countries (Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Venezuela, Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine). Documentation is required before funds are released for projects in these locations.
