Description
The Institute for Advanced Study’s School of Social Science invites approximately 20 scholars each year for residential fellowships in Princeton, New Jersey. Fellows, known as Members, pursue their research with access to offices, libraries, housing, subsidized dining, and other campus resources. About half work on the designated annual theme, while half pursue other projects across the social sciences and related disciplines.
The 2027–2028 theme, Understanding AI, examines artificial intelligence as a social, cultural, historical, economic, and political phenomenon. It welcomes theory, interpretation, and empirical research on AI’s uses and implications, including human agency, rights, labor, governance, capital, and geopolitics. Collaborative inquiry is integral to the theme seminar, convened by Alondra Nelson, Harold F. Linder Professor. Projects outside the theme are equally welcome.
