Description
The Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) Program provides assistance to states, local governments, and tribal governments for the mitigation, management, and control of fires on publicly or privately owned forests or grasslands. It addresses fires that threaten destruction severe enough to constitute a major disaster. FEMA Regional Administrators have authority to issue FMAG declarations, and the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management provides state program information and grants administration support.
FMAG is separate from FEMA’s Public Assistance Program. Its framework is established in Title 44 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 204, and FEMA’s Fire Management Assistance Grant Program guidance. Assistance includes eligible firefighting costs, with an expedited declaration process intended to support response while a threat of major disaster exists.
