The Adam Walsh Act Implementation Grant Program assists jurisdictions with developing and enhancing programs designed to implement the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). The program is administered by the SMART Office, a component of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs responsible for guidance and assistance related to sex offender registration and notification systems, technology, and training.
SORNA establishes comprehensive national standards for sex offender registration and notification. It requires states, the District of Columbia, principal U.S. territories, and participating federally recognized Indian tribes to maintain sex offender registries. Its requirements address registry information, registration where offenders live, work, or attend school, participation in the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website, interjurisdictional information exchange, and advance notice of international travel by offenders.
