EPA’s Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization administers these Community-wide Assessment Grants for States and Tribes. The program funds brownfield inventories, site prioritization, community involvement, planning, environmental site assessments, site-specific cleanup plans, and reuse plans. Projects may address actual or potential contamination from hazardous substances, pollutants, contaminants, or petroleum. A portion of every award must support site assessments; cleanup activities are not funded.
The program aims to mitigate health risks, restore economic vitality, and help communities benefit from brownfields redevelopment, including communities affected by economic disinvestment, health disparities, and environmental contamination. EPA evaluates redevelopment strategies, community needs and engagement, reasonable costs, environmental results, and applicants’ capacity to implement projects. Awards are cooperative agreements involving substantial EPA participation.
