Description
Floodplains by Design is a competitive capital grant program administered by the Washington State Department of Ecology in partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. It supports integrated projects in Washington’s major river corridors that reduce flood hazards and protect or restore floodplain ecosystems. The program seeks to improve protection for communities, conserve habitat for salmon and other aquatic species, and keep farmland viable.
Projects can span community engagement and planning, studies and modeling, design, permitting, construction and planting, property acquisition or easements, and measures such as home elevation or relocation. The program brings local and Tribal governments, nonprofits, and other floodplain stakeholders together to address river and community needs.
