Description
Focus on Freedom is a grant program from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs dedicated to promoting equal rights for LGBTIQ+ persons and advancing freedom of religion and belief, with a focus on protecting religious minorities. The initiative is part of the Dutch government's broader ‘Focus’ policy framework, which aims to strengthen the capacity and local ownership of civil society organizations (CSOs) in selected countries.
The program is divided into two main sub-instruments:
- Equal Rights for LGBTIQ+ People: Supports dialogue, legal and psychosocial support, anti-discrimination advocacy, and local protection efforts.
- Freedom of Religion and Belief: Fosters interfaith dialogue, reduces tensions and risks of extremism, and enhances inclusion of vulnerable groups.
Grants are intended to finance activities such as education, training, legal assistance, protection, dialogue with stakeholders, and advocacy at national and international levels. The program emphasizes support for local CSOs and their capacity building, with options for international or regional organizations to act as intermediaries.
