Description
The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) funds Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeships through Support for Targeted Opportunities. The program supports intermediate-level artists learning a specific traditional art form from a master folk artist within their own community. These forms are passed between generations in distinctive ethnic, regional, occupational, or religious communities. Priority goes to traditions that are no longer widely practiced.
The master artist and apprentice jointly develop a one-year study plan with a series of lessons and specific skills to master. The program values distinctive curricula, the master artist’s expertise, and achievable goals appropriate to the apprentice’s existing abilities. Proposals must explain how the apprentice will continue practicing afterward and contribute to sustaining and preserving the tradition.
