Description
The South Carolina Arts Commission supports projects that keep the state’s diverse living traditions vibrant and visible in community life. Traditional arts are expressions of shared identity learned within a cultural group and passed between generations. These connections may be familial, geographic, tribal, occupational, religious, or ethnic. The program embraces indigenous, longstanding, and more recently arrived traditions, including changes and individual innovation within living cultures.
Supported activities include presentations of traditional artists, documentation with public access, fieldwork identifying traditions and practitioners, production or distribution of artists’ work, acquisition of difficult-to-obtain materials or equipment, and preservation through apprenticeships or classes. Priority goes to organizations located in, or activities taking place within, SCAC’s Opportunity Initiative Counties.
