Description
The South Carolina Arts Commission funds projects that keep the state’s living traditions vibrant and visible in community life. Traditional arts express a group’s shared identity, are passed between generations, and change through practitioners’ innovations. The program encompasses indigenous, longstanding, and more recently arrived traditions and communities.
Projects may present traditional artists through workshops, concerts, festivals, exhibitions, radio programs, or recordings; document South Carolina folklife for public presentation or access; or conduct fieldwork to identify traditions and artists. Support can also cover production or distribution of an artist’s work, difficult-to-obtain materials or equipment, and preservation through apprenticeships or classes. The commission prioritizes activities or applicants in its Opportunity Initiative Counties.
