Description
The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) supports research to maintain and develop national competence in radiation safety and nuclear non-proliferation, and to provide knowledge and methods for its regulatory work. The programme funds doctoral projects, postdoctoral projects and research assignments through four streams: new nuclear power, existing nuclear power, nuclear waste management and final disposal, and other radiation safety.
New nuclear power research includes small modular reactors. Existing nuclear power priorities include radiation protection, severe accidents, fuel behaviour, structural integrity, safety analysis and safeguards. Waste research supports licensing and supervision of safe disposal and decommissioning, including repository barriers, environmental modelling and social science. Other radiation safety priorities include ionising radiation health effects, AI in healthcare radiation protection, radioecology and radiological emergency protection.
