Description
The Washington State Department of Ecology runs this annual grant program to address harmful freshwater blooms caused by cyanobacteria, sometimes called blue-green algae. Cyanobacteria can produce toxins that make people, pets, and livestock sick. The program provides financial assistance for projects that manage blooms and improve water quality and public health across Washington.
Supported work includes Lake Cyanobacteria Management Plans, cyanobacteria control and management, research or pilot projects, monitoring, nutrient reduction, and education and outreach. Ecology gives priority to lakes that have experienced harmful freshwater algae blooms within the past three years.
