Funding Amounts: Up to $50,000 per award for one year; four awards planned
Summary: Supports collaborative pilot projects that develop generalizable solutions to translational research barriers and generate preliminary data for future external funding.
Key Information: PIs must be Frontiers members eligible for investigator-initiated federal funding at a partner or collaborator institution.
Frontiers Clinical & Translational Science Institute supports multidisciplinary, investigator-initiated pilot research that addresses barriers slowing the translation of discoveries into improvements in human health. The program combines one-year research funding with educational opportunities, proposal review, resources, and implementation support. Its goal is to generate preliminary data for subsequent externally funded, high-impact studies, with particular encouragement for early- and mid-career investigators.
Projects must focus on translational science: developing generalizable scientific or operational principles, methods, tools, or strategies that improve the research process. Supported activities include new methodologies and technologies, early-stage therapies addressing translational roadblocks, demonstrations of improved efficiency, dissemination of effective approaches, and feasibility or proof-of-concept studies. Programmatic fit includes multidisciplinary perspectives, local and rural health issues, community-based research, and implementation of clinical findings into practice.
