Administered in Portugal by Fulbright Commission Portugal, this award supports a four-month project agreed with a Portuguese host institution. American Studies is understood as the interdisciplinary study of American culture, history, and society. Candidates may come from any discipline, including anthropology, architecture, education, history, literature, law, philosophy, political science, and public policy, provided their work systematically addresses the United States.

Activities may include undergraduate or graduate teaching, applicant-designed or host-designated research, professional or artistic projects, student mentoring, and faculty, curriculum, or program development. The Commission seeks accomplished candidates whose work can advance their fields and foster long-term collaboration. Public talks and engagement with the host community support Fulbright’s broader goal of strengthening relationships and mutual understanding between people in the United States and other countries.
