Description
The Fulbright Bicentennial Chair supports one U.S. scholar for nine months of teaching and research in the University of Helsinki’s Department of Cultures, North American Studies program. Established in 1976, the Chair develops interdisciplinary American Studies at Helsinki and other Finnish universities. Projects must address U.S. culture, history, and/or society through an interdisciplinary humanities or social sciences approach.
The Chair’s activities are designed jointly with North American Studies faculty and combine undergraduate teaching, master’s seminars, research collaboration, joint publications, and student mentoring. The program promotes academic links and mutual understanding between Finland and the United States. Funding is provided in cooperation with the Fulbright Finland Foundation, the Finland-America Educational Trust Fund, and the University of Helsinki; the Institute of International Education (IIE) administers the U.S. side on behalf of the U.S. Department of State.
