Description
This Fulbright Distinguished Scholar award supports a nine-month teaching and research appointment in the University of Helsinki’s Department of Cultures, North American Studies program. Established in 1976, the Chair develops interdisciplinary American studies at Helsinki and other Finnish universities. Projects may address any area of American Studies in the humanities and social sciences, but must take an interdisciplinary approach to U.S. culture, history, or society.
The Chair combines a research project of the scholar’s choosing with undergraduate survey courses, master’s seminars, and student mentoring. Collaboration with Finnish colleagues, joint publications, and academic networking extend the exchange beyond the host department. The University of Helsinki and Fulbright Finland Foundation jointly fund the award, with IIE administering the U.S. application process on behalf of the Department of State. The broader goal is to strengthen U.S.–Finnish relationships and international understanding.
