Description
The Future Leaders in Psychiatry Program (FLIPP) is a one-year educational and professional development program offered by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). It is part of APA’s Workforce Development Initiative, supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship Program. FLIPP combines a virtual curriculum with an in-person Future Leaders Academy to broaden university students’ exposure to psychiatry.
The program provides career-development lectures, MCAT preparation, medical school application sessions, and mentorship from current medical students. It contributes to the initiative’s broader goals of developing the psychiatric workforce across academic levels, increasing psychiatrists’ capacity to provide patient-centered mental health and substance use disorder services, and supporting service administration, research, and teaching. The initiative also seeks to increase knowledge of prevention, treatment, and recovery support.
