Description
FEMA’s Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Research and Development Activity supports research with results that can be readily applied by the fire service. It funds clinical studies, technology and product development, preliminary studies, and early-career investigator projects. Research should address firefighter-specific risks and demonstrate how successful outcomes could be implemented across the broader fire service.
The program emphasizes partnerships with fire departments and fire service organizations, from study design through dissemination and implementation. Special emphasis topics in the FY 2024 applicant guidance include mental health and well-being, occupational health and chemical exposures, and wildland and wildland–urban interface firefighting hazards. Basic science requiring years of development and iterative projects is not typically funded.
