Description
Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) is a competitive FEMA program administered in South Carolina by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). It funds planning and mitigation projects that reduce or eliminate repetitive flood damage to buildings and structures insured under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in participating communities. Its goal is to reduce flood risk to policyholders and, in turn, flood insurance claims.
Funding covers capability and capacity building, localized flood risk reduction, and mitigation of individual properties. FEMA selects projects based on the applicant’s ranking, eligibility, and cost-effectiveness. The FY2024 opportunity was funded through the National Flood Insurance Fund and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
