Description
The Galactosemia Foundation Research Grant Program funds scientific and medical research projects focused on classical galactosemia. The program aims to improve the lives of individuals with galactosemia by supporting projects that address identification, treatment, therapy development, and complications or variability in outcomes. The Foundation welcomes a broad range of proposals, including research, clinical, educational, and collaborative initiatives, especially those addressing outstanding questions or unmet needs in the galactosemia community.
Areas of high interest for the 2026–2028 cycle include:
- Bone health and density (including mechanisms and interventions)
- Cognition (deficits, longitudinal studies, treatments)
- Diet-related issues (enzyme activity, diet liberalization, outcomes)
- Gastrointestinal complications and gut-brain axis
- Neurological and motor concerns (seizures, movement disorders)
- Pharmaceutical/supplementation interventions
- Premature ovarian insufficiency/failure (POI/POF) and women’s health
- Psychological and mental health concerns (anxiety, depression)
- Prognosis, biomarkers, and genetic factors
- Speech-language issues across the lifespan
The Foundation encourages both new and ongoing projects, collaborative efforts, and proposals from researchers with or without prior galactosemia experience.
