The State Historical Society of Missouri’s Gary R. Kremer Center for Missouri Studies Fellowships promote and disseminate scholarship about Missouri’s past, including interdisciplinary studies of its history and culture. The competition supports academic and independent scholars investigating underexplored subjects and bringing fresh perspectives to Missouri history, including work at intersections such as business and sociology or history and science.
The announced 2027 topics address Missouri’s regional identity and its relationship with conservation. Identity projects explore events, trends, or turning points that illuminate how Missourians understand themselves and how others perceive the state. Conservation projects examine interactions with Missouri’s natural environment and how decisions about natural resources have shaped its history. Completed essays are considered for publication in the Missouri Historical Review, and fellows have an opportunity to present their research publicly.
