The U.S. Geological Survey seeks a Great Rivers Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit partner to study Great Lakes fish ecology and support resource management and recovery planning over five years.
Funder: U.S. Geological Survey
Due Dates: December 7, 2026, 11:59 PM ET (Applications)
Funding Amounts: $1–$475,000 for a five-year project; one award anticipated
Summary: Supports cooperative research on fish ecology, population dynamics, and resource management across the Great Lakes basin and tributaries.
Key Information: Applicants must be participating partners of the Great Rivers Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), through its Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC), supports a cooperative research program addressing fish ecology, behavior, population dynamics, and management across the Great Lakes basin and connected tributaries. Research may focus on individual lakes or tributary systems, examining fish responses to habitat alteration, invasive species, nutrient loading, contaminants, and restoration or remediation actions.
Priorities include population assessment and monitoring methods; movement, connectivity, habitat use, and behavioral ecology; fish assemblages and biodiversity; aquatic invasive species and management outcomes; and decision-support tools for conservation and restoration. Study questions and approaches will be refined collaboratively with CERC scientists. Data analysis, reporting, and assessment development are intended to support evidence-based management and recovery planning over five years.
