Funding Amounts: $300,000 estimated total for one five-year cooperative agreement; $200,000 estimated for Year 1

Summary: Supports analysis of long-term aquatic monitoring data to assess watershed condition and inform adaptive management under the Northwest Forest Plan.

Key Information: Applicants must be participating partners of the Pacific Northwest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit.

    Description

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) supports research to analyze, synthesize, and interpret aquatic monitoring data within the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) area. The project will quantify management-related changes in in-stream and upslope indicators of watershed condition, using reproducible analytical methods to evaluate long-term trends, identify ecological thresholds, and support adaptive management.

Work will be conducted with interagency NWFP partners using data collected and curated by the Aquatic and Riparian Effectiveness Monitoring Program (AREMP), building on the interagency 25-year watershed condition report. Research objectives include analyzing more than 30 years of sediment, wetted stream width, and in-channel large wood observations, and modeling fish passage, water quality, and transportation infrastructure responses to stream, road, and road-crossing features. Results will inform water quality, outdoor recreation, and hunting and fishing access.
