Description
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of NIH, supports the George M. O’Brien Urology Cooperative Research Centers through U54 cooperative agreements. The program advances basic, translational, and clinical research on non-cancer genitourinary diseases and healthy function. Centers develop resources for the national urology research community, engage investigators across disciplines, and promote junior scientists’ involvement in urologic research.
Research priorities include lower urinary tract symptoms, chronic pelvic pain, urinary tract infections, stones, bladder and prostate disorders, erectile dysfunction, and urinary or reproductive birth defects. Cross-cutting approaches such as regenerative medicine, artificial intelligence, and microbiome research are encouraged. Centers collaborate through the CAIRIBU program with other U54 centers, P20 centers, the U24 Interactions Core, and related K12 career development programs. Clinical trials are optional.
