Funder: German Research Foundation
Due Dates: January 27, 2027 (First-time elan registration) | February 2, 2027 (Proposal submission)
Funding Amounts: Up to three years of project funding, starting in 2027
Summary: Supports research using scientific ocean drilling data and cores, preparation for future expeditions, and development of drilling tools and software.
Key Information: Proposals must have a clear link to ongoing, past or future drilling projects.
The German Research Foundation’s Infrastructure Priority Programme SPP 527 supports innovative research connected to the International Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP³) and its predecessor programmes. IODP³ is jointly led by the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) and Japan. Funding supports analysis of drilling data and cores, preparation for future expeditions, and development of drilling tools and software.
Research priorities follow the 2050 Science Framework: habitability and life, tectonic plate cycles, climate, Earth system feedbacks, historical tipping points, global energy and matter cycles, and natural hazards. The framework emphasises societal relevance and interactions among Earth system components, including multidisciplinary work spanning multiple expeditions. Joint land-to-sea projects with the International Continental Scientific Drilling Programme (ICDP) address hazards, coastal freshwater–seawater interactions, ice sheet dynamics, sea level change and sustainable georesources.
