Gerstner Scholars supports early-career biological scientists pursuing creative research, especially genomics, to advance understanding of evolution, biodiversity, and human health through other organisms.
Funder: American Museum of Natural History
Due Dates: November 15, 2026, 11:59 p.m. ET (Main application and Gerstner abstract)
Funding Amounts: Expected salary of $73,316 plus benefits; appointments up to two years
Summary: Supports early-career biological scientists pursuing creative research, especially genomics, through AMNH’s postdoctoral fellowship competition.
Key Information: Not a stand-alone fellowship: applicants must submit the main postdoctoral application and a Gerstner abstract.
The Gerstner Scholars program at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), funded by the Gerstner Family Foundation, supports groundbreaking biological research with an emphasis on genomics. Relevant subjects include microbes, mammals, invertebrates, marine life, and computational biology. The program recognizes early-career biological scientists whose outstanding performance and creative research approaches are likely to lead to important discoveries.
Gerstner Scholars are selected through the Museum’s main Postdoctoral Research Fellowship competition, overseen by the Richard Gilder Graduate School (RGGS). Fellows undertake specific, time-limited projects with Museum professionals. Research may advance understanding of species evolution and diversity, the tree of life, or human and medical research through studying other organisms. Projects incorporating bioinformatics and computational biology are strongly encouraged.
