Description
Funded by the Getty Foundation and administered by the Getty Research Institute, the Getty Scholars Program supports established researchers and professionals undertaking innovative research about art, broadly conceived, and its histories. Scholar Grants at the Getty Center in Los Angeles bring international researchers together around an annual theme, encouraging collaboration across disciplines and professional practices and helping scholars develop new audiences for their work. Residents have access to Getty’s extensive library and collections and receive research assistance.
Within the annual theme, dedicated African American Art History Initiative (AAAHI) appointments support research that expands critical inquiry into African American art and its frameworks. These appointments aim to generate new knowledge and make African American art history more visible to the public and accessible to scholars worldwide. Getty Center Scholar Grants are distinct from the separate predoctoral, postdoctoral, Getty Villa, and conservation programs.
