The Gloria Barron Wilderness Society Scholarship supports graduate students conducting research and preparing a paper on an aspect of wilderness. Created by T.A. Barron in 1987 in honor of his mother, an educator and wilderness advocate, the scholarship seeks to encourage future conservation leaders who can make a significant positive difference in understanding and protecting wilderness.
Supported research addresses the establishment, protection, or management of wilderness and protected areas, or conservation on public lands. Projects may focus on a particular landscape or examine broader issues, relate to The Wilderness Society’s current programs, or introduce a new topic. The scholarship also supports research and career development activities. The Society encourages publication of the completed work in an academic journal or another appropriate medium.
