Summary: Supports mathematicians during career interruptions to maintain mathematical activity and prepare for a return to a mathematical career.
Key Information: Applicants must have submitted their PhD thesis and have support from a UK Mathematics Department.
The London Mathematical Society’s Grace Chisholm Young Fellowships support mathematicians whose careers are temporarily interrupted by family responsibilities, a partner’s relocation, or similar circumstances. Named after Grace Chisholm Young, the fellowship endorses the holder’s status as a mathematician so that a break in formal employment need not prevent a later return to the profession.
The scheme combines a personal research support fund with affiliation to a Mathematics Department at a UK university or research institute. Its purpose is to make continued mathematical activity possible during the interruption and help the fellow remain in a position to apply for posts when circumstances allow. The Society offers one fellowship each year, administered by its Committee for Women and Diversity in Mathematics. Applications are open to eligible individuals of any gender.
