--- ## Description The Live Like Lou Graduate Fellowship, administered by the ALS Association, is designed to attract and support emerging researchers in PhD programs who are dedicated to advancing the understanding, treatment, or cure of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The fellowship provides funding for graduate students to conduct innovative neurodegenerative disease research, focusing specifically on ALS. Awardees are selected based on scientific merit, innovation, project significance, and the potential impact of the work on both ALS research and the applicant’s future career. --- ## Due Dates - Applications are anticipated to open and fellowships to begin in April 2025. - All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates. --- ## Funding Amount - Up to $50,000 annually for up to two years (maximum $100,000 total per fellow). - Up to two fellowships will be awarded each cycle. - No indirect costs allowed; funds may be used for salary expenses. --- ## Eligibility - Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a PhD graduate program during the 2025–2027 academic years. - Applicants should be in the research phase of their degree (post-qualifying exam). - The award must be administered through the student’s university; payments are made to the institution. - Only one application per lab per cycle. - Applications and supporting documents must be in English. - Indirect costs are not permitted. --- ## Application Process - Prepare and submit the following: - Applicant and institution details (including NIH biosketches). - Lay summary (1,500 character limit) and technical abstract (1,500 character limit). - Specific aims (1 page). - Research plan (3 pages, excluding references), including background, innovation, experimental design, preliminary data, expected outcomes, and alternative approaches. - Budget narrative (1,500 character limit) outlining institutional support. - Letter of recommendation and confirmation of institutional support from the mentor/sponsor (2 pages). - Mentor’s NIH biosketch. - If vertebrate animals/materials are used, include institutional Animal Care and Use approval. - Appendix material is limited to one unpublished/preprint manuscript or accepted (not yet published) paper. - Disclose any potential conflicts of interest. Applications are evaluated by the Live Like Lou Scientific Director and Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board.
