Established by the Healthcare Infection Society (HIS) in 2013, the Graham Ayliffe Fellowship provides clinicians working in infection prevention and control (IPC) with a paid leave of absence equivalent to one full-time year. It supports innovative approaches to a specialist IPC interest, helping fellows expand their expertise and share knowledge with the wider scientific and medical community.
Supported work includes experience in a specialist service, developing expertise that could become a regional or national resource, research, and significant audits with greater-than-local scope and a complete audit cycle. Fellows may develop guidelines in areas of substantial importance or need, including pilot implementation, produce structured literature reviews or meta-analyses, or gain experience as a part-time trainee editor for the Journal of Hospital Infection. Courses and conference attendance can support the fellowship’s training objectives.
