Key Information: A Professional Development Plan must be supported independently of the R03 research funding.
GEMSSTAR supports early-career clinician-scientists launching aging- or geriatric-focused research careers within their clinical specialties. Led by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), with participation from NIDCR, NINR, and NIMHD, this R03 program supports a first independent research project or a meaningful shift from non-aging research into aging science. The goal is to build research experience and pilot data for subsequent projects in a supportive research environment.
Projects may include pilot or feasibility studies, secondary data analyses, or development of research methods and technologies. Basic, translational, clinical, genetic, and epidemiologic research are eligible, using human participants, animal models, or in vitro systems as appropriate. Clinical trials are optional, although the budget and timeline generally favor mechanistic or small pilot trials.
