The Great Strides Program, also called Trails for Life, is administered by the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism through its Outdoor Recreation Grants Program. It helps Arkansas communities develop smoke-free walking trails and public outdoor recreation facilities that encourage physical exercise. Funding comes from a portion of the state Master Tobacco Settlement Award.
Projects may create new walking trails or expand or renovate existing ones. Eligible trail-related facilities include accessible lighting, parking, signage, and benches. Trail signs and markings are supported when included in a construction or renovation project, rather than as a stand-alone project. The program awards grants annually and expects projects to be completed within one year.
