Summary: SCALED funds demonstration projects that strengthen domestic grid supply chains through equipment refurbishment and alternative materials or subcomponents.
Key Information: Demonstration projects only, with at least 50% nonfederal cost share based on total project costs.
The Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity runs SCALED to strengthen domestic supply chains for critical electric grid equipment, including distribution and power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and associated materials and subcomponents. The program aims to expand U.S. capacity, reduce foreign dependence, shorten procurement lead times, and improve grid reliability, affordability, and security.
The opportunity supports two complementary approaches: returning retired or damaged grid equipment and materials to productive use, and accelerating adoption of domestically sourced alternative materials and subcomponents. It targets implementation-ready demonstrations and manufacturing scale-up, not early-stage research. Projects should show strong technical merit, a clear path to market, and measurable domestic supply-chain impacts.
