The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS), established by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, supports individual research of outstanding quality and originality. Fellows pursue projects of their own choosing in an environment designed for reflection, concentration, and exchange. The program brings together scholars from varied disciplines, backgrounds, and nationalities to create a vibrant intellectual community.
Applications are considered from academics, emeriti, independent scholars, artists, and other professionals outside academia. The Institute seeks a balance between established scholars and promising younger intellectuals, without preset proportions. Selection is competitive and international, with particular emphasis on the proposed work’s originality and its fit with the Institute’s spirit and intellectual environment.
