The Gulf Research Program (GRP), part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, offers Science Policy Fellowships to prepare scientists, engineers, and health professionals for work at the intersection of offshore energy safety, environmental protection, and human health. Fellows spend one year with federal, state, local, or non-governmental agencies in the Gulf region, gaining practical experience at the science-policy interface.
With host-office mentoring, fellows contribute to policy development, environmental restoration and monitoring, resilience planning, grants management, socioeconomic assessment, public health surveillance, and stakeholder outreach. The fellowship supports leadership and professional development through hands-on policy work rather than traditional postdoctoral research training. It is not intended to support dissertation or thesis research, data collection, fieldwork, or participant recruitment.
