Description
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) established the Gweneth Humphreys Award to recognize outstanding mentorship of undergraduate women in mathematics. The annual prize honors mathematics teachers whose encouragement helps female students pursue mathematical careers or graduate study. It recognizes a mentor’s influence on students’ development and paths beyond their undergraduate years, rather than funding a research project.
The award commemorates M. Gweneth Humphreys and her lifelong commitment to teaching women mathematics. Initiated by Carol Wood and funded through contributions from Humphreys’ former students and colleagues at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, it celebrates mentorship whose impact extends beyond academia. Humphreys’ students went on to contribute to fields including K–12 education, publishing, software, and law.
