The Harvard Brain Science Initiative (HBI) administers this seed grant program to advance the basic understanding and treatment of bipolar disorder. Supported by the Dauten Family Foundation and Sandra Lee Chen and Sidney Chen, it funds innovative, visionary projects that introduce new ideas and approaches to fundamental questions and may not attract conventional funding.
Supported work includes basic, translational, and clinical research on bipolar disorder’s root causes, biological mechanisms, genetics, and novel treatment strategies. The program seeks early-stage projects that seed new lines of inquiry and may lead to NIH or other external funding, rather than continuing established projects already supported elsewhere. Projects focused on bipolar disorder genetics, or hypotheses arising from genetic analyses, are encouraged.
