The Harvard-Yenching Library Travel Grant helps scholars from outside the Boston area travel to Cambridge to conduct research using the library’s collections. Administered by the Harvard-Yenching Library and supported by the Harvard-Yenching Institute, the program offers merit-based awards each year. Priority goes to researchers whose institutions have limited or no East Asian language library resources and those without major East Asian library collections nearby.
Supported research spans Chinese, Japanese, and Korean history, literature, culture, and society, including maritime exchanges and colonial relationships. Past projects have examined early medieval Chinese calligraphy, motherhood in modern China, religion and belonging in Japan, and the effects of Korean division and war on orphans and refugees. The program centers on access to specific library resources needed for applicants’ research.
