Description
The Washington Military Department Emergency Management Division administers Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) grants for work that reduces long-term risks to people and property from natural hazards. Washington prioritizes geologic and climate hazards, particularly flooding, fire, earthquakes, tsunamis, and extreme weather. These grants support sustainable mitigation rather than immediate preparedness, response, or recovery.
Funded activities can include creating or updating hazard mitigation plans, mapping, project scoping, partnerships, and codes and standards. Construction projects can include property acquisition, structure elevation or relocation, floodproofing, wildfire mitigation, structural retrofits, warning systems, and tsunami vertical evacuation. Assistance can also cover costs of administering FEMA HMA grants.
