Description
The Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) programs, administered by the Iowa Department of Public Safety / HSEMD and funded by FEMA, provide comprehensive funding opportunities for Iowa communities to reduce or eliminate long-term risk from natural hazards. The HMA suite includes the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC), and Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA), supporting both pre- and post-disaster mitigation activities. Eligible activities include hazard mitigation planning, property acquisition and demolition, flood risk reduction, safe rooms for public use, infrastructure retrofits, and more. The goal is to break the cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction by supporting sustainable, cost-effective mitigation projects.
