Description
The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds long-term measures after a Presidential major disaster declaration. Administered in Arkansas by the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management (ADEM), it helps state and local governments reduce the risk of future damage, rather than only repair facilities damaged in a disaster. Funding is available in areas of the state requested by the Governor when authorized under a declaration.
ADEM also describes a separate State of Arkansas Hazard Mitigation Grant Program focused on permanent solutions for local jurisdictions with repetitive disaster losses. Examples of mitigation work include elevated bridges, culverts, warning sirens, critical-infrastructure retrofits and generators for critical facilities.
