Description
The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management presents the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) grant to strengthen state and local readiness for hazardous materials incidents. The program provides financial and technical assistance, along with national direction and guidance, for emergency planning and training. It distributes fees collected from hazardous materials shippers and carriers to support responder training and planning by Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs).
Planning activities can include emergency response plans and exercises, commodity flow studies, writing and printing response plans, and hazards analyses. Training supports public-sector employees and volunteers involved in hazardous materials emergency response.
