The Healthcare Infection Society (HIS) funds research on healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) and infection prevention and control (IPC). The Major Research Grant supports projects that answer well-defined questions, provide opportunities for hypothesis testing, build collaborations between clinicians and researchers, and encourage innovative, interdisciplinary approaches. It favours translational research over pure science and can support a PhD studentship, MD or other research worker, alongside related consumables and equipment.
HIS’s research strategy prioritises practical, applied work that improves infection control and patient safety, particularly evidence gaps identified through guidelines and specialist networks. Its wider goal is to connect evidence generation with guideline development, implementation, education and clinical practice. Major Research Grants are suitable for NIHR partnership within its Clinical Research Network Portfolio.
