Description
The Kansas Department of Transportation’s High Risk Rural Roads (HRRR) Program is a federal-aid initiative administered through the Bureau of Local Projects. It supports low-cost improvements on rural roads where fatal and incapacitating-injury crash rates exceed the statewide average for comparable road classes, or where anticipated traffic growth is likely to create rates above that average.
Supported work includes pavement markings, rumble strips, tree removal, enhanced signage, and improvements to roadside barriers such as culvert headwalls and guardrails. Applications may address site-specific safety problems or systemic improvements. The program’s systemic approach focuses on roadway departures and reducing the severity of collisions with roadside fixed objects through more recoverable roadsides, safety edge treatments, and improvements to trees, barriers, and culverts.
