Description
Wisconsin’s Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) is a core Federal-aid program administered by WisDOT to significantly reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries. It supports infrastructure improvements on all public roads, including non-State-owned roads and roads on Tribal lands. Projects are identified and selected through a data-driven, strategic approach focused on sites with a high crash history.
Lower-cost treatments receive first consideration, with an emphasis on projects that can be delivered quickly, ideally within four years. Examples include intersection improvements, traffic signals, sight-distance improvements, auxiliary lanes, traffic calming, roadside obstacle removal, protective barriers, and pedestrian, bicyclist, and disability-related safety improvements where crashes occur. Regional Safety Engineers help identify countermeasures and develop applications.
