Description
Wisconsin’s Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). It supports infrastructure improvements on public roads, including non-state-owned roads and roads on Tribal lands. Projects are selected through a data-driven approach focused on documented crash problems and the potential to reduce fatalities and serious injuries—not highway needs in general.
WisDOT gives lower-cost treatments first consideration and emphasizes projects that can be delivered quickly, ideally within four years. Examples include intersection changes, sight-distance improvements, pedestrian and bicyclist safety measures where crashes have occurred, and roadside barriers. The program also includes the High Risk Rural Roads Program (HRRRP), focused on lower-cost improvements to rural collector corridors.
