HMS Junior Faculty Grant supports promising Harvard Medical School junior faculty with research into biological mechanisms, helping sustain their scientific work early in their careers.
Funder: Giovanni Armenise-Harvard Foundation
Due Dates (Anticipated): November 2026 (Department head nomination deadline)
Funding Amounts: Two-year grants; 3–6 awards annually, with total program investment up to USD 600,000 per year
Summary: Supports promising Harvard Medical School junior faculty conducting early-career research into biological mechanisms.
Key Information: There is no open call; candidates are nominated by HMS Basic Science department heads.
The Giovanni Armenise-Harvard Foundation’s HMS Junior Faculty Grant supports promising young scientists at Harvard Medical School early in their careers, recently out of medical school or postdoctoral training. The program helps sustain research at a stage when scientists may lack the extensive publication record often needed to attract funding in a highly competitive environment.
The two-year grants support investigations into biological mechanisms. Recent recipients have studied mammalian brain circuitry development, the translation of neuronal activity into gene expression states, and the structures and mechanisms of membrane-associated lipid flippases using cryo-EM. Other supported research examines cellular factors enabling viral replication, circadian control of genes and its relationship to physiology and behavior, and the generation and differentiation of nervous-system cells during mammalian embryonic development.
