Description
The HREC Educator Award for Holodomor Lesson Plan Development is an annual award administered by the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC), a project of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta. It recognizes outstanding educators and encourages innovative, creative and interactive lessons for grades K–12 about the Holodomor, the Ukrainian genocide of 1932–33.
The program prioritizes lessons that develop students’ critical thinking skills. Its educational context includes human rights, genocide, history and social justice curricula, where the Holodomor is taught in many parts of Canada. The Holodomor is also one of nine genocides formally recognized by the Government of Canada. Winning lessons are shared publicly with their authors acknowledged.
