--- ## Description The Humanities in Place grant program funds organizations, artists, institutions, and storytellers who spotlight historically overlooked sites and communities. The goal is to broaden public understanding of American and Indigenous histories, promote cultural heritage, and foster access to and exchange of stories in museums and public spaces. The program emphasizes authentic engagement with local histories and encourages innovative, community-driven ways of connecting people through shared and unique narratives. --- ## Due Dates - Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. --- ## Funding Amount - There is no set minimum or maximum award amount; funding is determined based on the scope and needs of the proposed project and the applicant organization. - Grant duration and budget are flexible and tailored to each project. - Indirect costs are generally funded at 20% of direct costs for most project support grants, with exceptions for certain types of organizations and projects. --- ## Eligibility - **Eligible Applicants:** - Most grants are awarded to organizations in the United States with IRS 501(c)(3) public charity status. - Organizations outside the U.S. may apply if they are equivalent to U.S. public charities. - Projects must be submitted by or in partnership with a community or organization and must provide direct public access and/or community benefit. - **Ineligible Applicants/Projects:** - Individuals (direct applications from individuals are not accepted). - Universities without established community partners or direct public/community-focused projects. - K-12 and youth programs, scholarship programs, organizational capital campaigns, health or social services, fundraising events, projects primarily commemorative in nature, or standalone film, media, publications, or journalism projects. - Projects intended solely for commercial use, those without a charitable purpose, or those situated on private, commercial, or retail property with limited public access (excluding Tribal lands). --- ## Application Process - **Initial Inquiry:** Submit a funding inquiry through the [Mellon Foundation Grants Portal](https://mellon.fluxx.io/apply/hip). Inquiries are reviewed on a rolling basis, typically within three months. - **Proposal Submission:** If invited, submit a full proposal through the Fluxx portal, including: - Organization and project information - Proposal narrative (5–10 pages, or 2–3 pages for Officer Grants) - Supplemental documents (financial statements, key staff bios, etc.) - Detailed budget and budget description - **Review:** Proposals are reviewed by Mellon staff.
