--- ## Description The fellowship provides recent PhDs in anthropology and related fields with resources to complete significant writing projects, such as books, monographs, journal articles, or book chapters. Designed to foster transformative scholarship, it welcomes applications regardless of methodology, subfield, or research location, and encourages independent scholars to apply. Projects that emphasize comparative perspectives, innovative approaches, or integrate multiple subfields are particularly valued. The Foundation seeks proposals from applicants who have made substantial progress on their writing and who can clearly articulate the anticipated impact of their work on anthropological knowledge and debates. --- ## Due Dates - May 1, 2026: Full application deadline (for fellowships beginning between January 1 and December 31 of the following year) - Annual cycle; the next anticipated deadline after May 1, 2026, will be May 1, 2027. Applications are due by midnight Eastern Time (UTC-04:00) on the deadline date. --- ## Funding Amount - Maximum award: $40,000 for a 9-month period of full-time writing. - The fellowship may be prorated for shorter periods (minimum duration not specified); monthly stipend remains the same. - Up to 20 fellowships are awarded each year. - Funds do not cover institutional overhead or administrative fees. --- ## Eligibility - Applicants must have a PhD in anthropology or a closely related field, awarded no more than ten years prior to the application deadline (allowances made for caregiving; contact the Foundation if this applies). - Open to scholars of any nationality and institutional affiliation; independent scholars are encouraged to apply. - Preference is given to applicants who are untenured or do not have a permanent academic position. - The research forming the basis of the writing project should be completed by the time of application. In special cases, a minor component of research may be completed during the fellowship, but this must be approved in advance and cannot exceed one quarter of the fellowship period. - Applicants may not have more than one Wenner-Gren application under consideration at a time and must have completed all requirements of any existing Wenner-Gren award before reapplying. - Prior recipients of a Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowship are not eligible. --- ## Application Process - Applications must be submitted online in English; the portal opens 2 months before the deadline. - Required components include: - Applicant profile (educational history, current position, optional demographic info) - Project information (title, keywords, subdiscipline, proposed writing period, location, permits, other sources of support, etc.) - Abstract (up to 200 words) - Responses to five project description questions (detailed in the [application guide](https://wennergren.org/application-guide/hunt-postdoctoral-fellowship/)) - Annotated outline of planned publications - Bibliography (up to 10 pages) - Resubmission statement (if applicable) - Applicants must list required permits/permissions but do not submit them with the application; these will be requested upon award notification. - Disclosure of generative AI use in application preparation is required, though this information is not shared with reviewers. --- ## Additional Information - The Foundation requires compliance with all U.S. laws, including OFAC regulations for research in sanctioned countries or regions.
