Description
Villa I Tatti will offer two residential fellowships for the 2027–2028 academic year, supported by the Getty Foundation. The program supports scholars studying African artistic and architectural material, including archaeology and anthropology, and exchanges within Africa and between Africa and the wider Mediterranean during the 14th–17th centuries. It particularly welcomes projects connecting the visual and material histories of Sub-Saharan Africa with Italy, North Africa, and the Mediterranean.
Research may explore the reception of antiquity in the modern era or the modern and contemporary impact of early modern Eurafrican artworks, crafts, and practices. The fellowship promotes collaboration between scholars in African institutions and those in Europe and North America. Fellows join I Tatti’s interdisciplinary scholarly community and participate in the larger Black Mediterranean/Mediterraneo Nero project.
